WHITE PAGES & PUBLIC STANCES

The Board of Directors have put together some explanations for our membership and the public to better understand the issues that have been brought up in the newspaper by various groups and persons.  We strongly feel that because of the Veterinary input we have from many community practitioners, the influence of business personnel, the guidance from our donors and the research that is done with other humane groups that we have a strong working policy for the care of our animals. We use the “Guidelines for Standard of Care in Animal Shelters,” 2010, for our basic guidelines. We use focus groups to have input to our shelter activities and recruit outsiders to come in and give constructive criticism on our operations. It is not logical for those who continually criticize us who have never been here or do not understand the depth of our activities. We have built a new shelter with hard work, dedication and the desire to give our animals a safe, healthy home while they are with us.  We don’t have time to dive into the drama of others but will continue to strive for excellence.

It’s the Little Things…

A frantic call came in from a nice person who saw a squirrel trapped in a bird feeder. The squirrel, brown, squealing, chewing on its leg and alert would not be still while the officer that answered the call tried to get the little one unstuck. Missy is a kind soul and tried hard not to hurt the squirrel anymore than it was already injured. She gently pulled it out of its dilemma.

She called me as she was driving back to the shelter to tell me that she had an injured animal that may have to put to sleep. When she brought the animal into triage, we examined it through the cage and saw the dangling stump. When I looked into the eyes of this wild     creature, I couldn’t imagine how terrified it was.

We took him back to surgery and my assistant and I anesthetized him and examined his leg. As I christened him “Burt” we decided to amputate, as this was the only way to help him survive. He has enough leg left to climb a tree and escape predators. We put him back n a cage and gave him a smaller cage to hide in from all the commotion of the ICU area.

Update: Burtland

It is a fine day for squirrels. If you remember, Burt is the little squirrel that I had to amputate part of his leg to allow him to live. Well alive he is in his little area behind the shelter. He now has not one but two friends which have taken up residents with him. The newcomer is a rabbit who now lives in Burt’s little trailer park. He also befriended another squirrel that we picked up that had been hit by a car, but not bad enough to injure him severely. All three feast on corn on the cob, thanks to Char who feeds them everyday. Burt is so very brave that when we walk our dogs out back, he does not run away but sits up to scope out the intruders. We keep tabs on Burt and his friends everyday to see what they are up to and how they are getting along. We will keep you updated on the Burtland activity. –Dr. Carol Ecker
